A47151-05

Garibaldi, British Columbia - Cheakamus River.

On August 5th, 2005, freight train A47151-05 was barreling north towards Squamish. The cargo contained 40,000 liters of sodium hydroxide. Unfortunately, the cargo never found its way to the final destination. The rear section of the train derailed and crashed into the river. Right away the water began to mix with the NaOH causing it to foam and bubble. This hard chemical washed downward throughout the river killing all aquatic life. An estimated 500,000 fish from 10 different species died as a result of the spill.

Today, the river has fully recovered. Fish can be caught on the fly, and locals can be found sending it off rope swings when the sun gets hot. In the summer, the ruins double as mountain bike features, bush party hideouts and a place for old big foot to spend the night. In the winter, this is the perfect place for a hike when taking a break from the alpine.

To get to this location, turn left at the Function Junction lights when coming from Whistler Village and the parking will be around the ben. Head down the trail, carefully cross the swing bridge and enjoy.

Dress accordingly, bring a camera and pack some cold pops, or a thermos of bone-broth for yoda.
